Are you willing to work for less? These are the questions you need to be asking yourself tomorrow while casting your strike vote.
If you have not been keeping up with the many issues of the Bottom Line and/or are interested in a summary of why you should come out and vote for or against the strike, this message is for you. Over the last few months, your Negotiations Team has been pushing hard to keep the stipend, prevent a 12-month parsing out of your deductible contribution, and keep insurance premium payments at 93/7, just to name a few of the many things we have been fighting for. The Negotiations Team has repeatedly brought to the table every reasonable argument for the necessity of benefits like the stipend – it could not have been made more clear to the City how important this issue is to our members.
Regardless, the City is telling us that we either suffer a cut or we do something else. We are being told to live without a stipend with nothing in its place, not even a comparable COLA, and that we have to deal with a 12-month parse out of the deductible contribution. Personally, I’m not willing to suffer a cut and I’m not willing to watch those in lower pay scales suffer even more than I will. I’m willing to strike to tell the City that I will not stand for a pay cut when it’s obvious how well the City is doing financially and how important benefits like the stipend are to our members’ health and livelihoods. The reason we keep mentioning how close in numbers the Union’s proposals are to the City’s proposals is because we want to emphasize that the City is willing to drag this fight out with us over a mere pittance.
Rather than honoring the services all of us provide with a fair contract free from a pay and benefit cut, we are being told we must take their cuts and be happy with it. I’m not going to stand for that – who is with me? VOTE!
***Cast your ballot TOMORROW (Weds, Sept. 26th): 7am-4pm in the Madison Avenue Meeting Room; 4:30-7pm in the Main Meeting Room at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library***
