If you ran into one of your active Local 2975 members this week, you may have received a call slip with phone numbers for the Mayor, General Council, City Manager, and Human Resources Director. We would like folks who received the call slip to call those phone numbers this Friday the 5th. The idea is to not only get our message across that we won’t take any cuts to our healthcare, but to also jam up their phone lines and answering machines. You know, just in case they didn’t hear us at the City Council Meeting. For those who don’t know what to say, we have a script to guide you, regardless of whether you’re an AFSCME member or a community member. It is important that we keep the heat on the people that are involved in getting us the contract we set out to ratify. Please make the call this Friday!

As an AFSCME member:

“I’m very proud of the services that my colleagues in AFSCME provide the city and its residents. We work as a team to maintain, plan, build and repair the city services that make our city a safe, beautiful and valuable place to live.

It’s vitally important that we can stay healthy and not be forced to consider costs incurred due to our high deductibles, which could lead to long term health issues. Many of us do hazardous work and routinely risk our lives to provide these services.

Our lowest paid staff shouldn’t be forced to pay more out-of-pocket to cover their health care costs.  Loss of our stipend and parsing of our HSA represents a significant pay cut to our lowest paid colleagues who shelve books, prune trees, repair sidewalks, answer phones and keep the city going.

I ask you to consider this when discussing our contract with management.”

As a community member:

“Hello, my name is [first name only is fine], and I [am a registered voter / live] in [address].

I’m calling to say that I support for our city workers. Corvallis is a special and tight-nit community that values the dignity of working people.

Our City has a responsibility to provide affordable health care to our workers.

These cuts to health care are not justified, particularly when the city is hiring an expensive Portland attorney to attack these workers. We should be building bridges and lifting each other up, not attempting to score a quick political win.

As a [voter / resident], I urge you to settle a fair contract that protects these workers healthcare.

Thank you for your time.”

Simple yet powerful ways that we can influence! Keep up the great work team. We don’t know what we would do without you!

-Shilo and the Local 2975 team
